Building Permit Process

Nine steps involved in getting your building permit issued.

  1. Compile working drawings and documentation

Contact a building designer or architect to acquire a set of working drawings.

  2. Contact a building surveyor

With those working drawings and any other relevant documents you have gathered, contact a building surveyor for the proposed building works.

  3. Appoint your building surveyor

After receiving the quote from the building surveyor, and upon acceptance the building surveyor will send you an application form (Form 1) to fill out and sign, appointing them as the Relevant Building Surveyor for the project.

  4. Send documentation for assessment

After the building surveyor is appointed, they will complete an assessment of all the documents provided to ensure documentation complies with the relevant NCC, Building Act, Regulations and Standards.

  5. CFI - Further Items Checklist

Once the assessment is completed, a checklist will be sent outlining further items required to be sourced by you and/or your building designer.

  6. Send remaining requested documentation

When you and/or your building designer have compiled all the relevant documents on the checklist, send them to your building surveyor for review and to tick them off.

  7. Building permit number and construction levy

Once all items on the checklist have been provided, the building surveyor can apply on the Building & Plumbing Commission (BPC) BAMS website for a building permit number. The BPC will then email the person you have nominated to pay the construction levy. This is worked out as $128.00 for every $100,000 in building costs.

  8. Pay the levy

Be on the lookout for that email from the BPC and the link to pay the construction levy (it may go to your junk mail). Once paid, notify your building surveyor so they can issue the building permit with the allocated permit number from the BPC.

  9. Permit issued - you can proceed

Once you have received the building permit (Form 2) and stamped documentation, you can proceed with the works.
